Corrosion of coastal concrete housings in the caribbean
The corrosion of coastal concrete housings in the Caribbean coast of Mexico is discussed. The aggressive atmospheric environment has caused severe damage in the concrete and underlying reinforcing steel. Two housing developments were studied to analyze the failures and provide recommendations. The main structural system for housing consists of an array of vertical and horizontal plates. The position of the steel, concrete strength, porosity, and density indicated a concrete design good enough to support the dead and live load but not the environmental load. Concrete design based on strength criteria is insufficient to obtain the designed service life in Caribbean coastal regions in the Yucatan Peninsula. Poor construction practices, such as poorly consolidated concrete cover, causes premature damage to the concrete elements.
