Application of the acoustic emission technique to assess damage in masonry under increasing and sustained axial loading
The applicability of the Acoustic Emission (AE) Technique to assess damage evolution in masonry is investigated. Therefore, a series of short-term creep tests and compressive tests is performed on masonry columns. The results from the deformation measurements and the AE monitoring during the stress increase steps and the constant stress intervals of the short-term creep tests are discussed. The AE data gave better insight in the behaviour of the specimens during the tests and could be used in order to quantify the elastic and creep deformations under constant and increasing stresses. As it was stated in the introduction, the link between damage detection and quantifying the deterioration rate is a complex issue, which will remain one of the main points of focus during present and future research, as well for creep damage in masonry as for other AE applications.
