Experimental study on a barite heavyweight self-consolidating concrete
The investigation carried out in this study shows that SCC (self compacting concrete) with heavyweight barite aggregate can be produced meeting all fresh concrete requirements. The strength of the heavyweight SCC was 31 MPa (4.50 ksi), with a cement content of 300 kg/m3 (506 lb/yd3), which is deemed to be a competitive mixture. The density of the concrete was 3300 kg/m3 (206 lb/ft3) and the filling ability and passing ability (V-funnel test, L-boxtest) were judged to be adequate. Segregation was measured through different methods carried out on samples obtained from 15 cm (6 in.) in diameter and 70 cm (27.5 in.) in height columns, both in fresh and hardened state. No signs of visual segregation or surface defects were observed. Water permeability and pore-size distribution were randomly distributed throughout the column height, showing no evidence of possible segregation.
