Suspension bridge cables. Pathologies, inspection, alternative materials
Most of the components of suspension bridges can be adequately maintained or rehabilitated while the structure continues to carry traffic. For these types of bridges, the main cables are the primary load-carrying components. Consequently, even under hazardous conditions of exceptional magnitude, Suspension bridge cables are designed for a service life exceeding 100 years. This article discusses loading conditions of critical cable components, emphasizing the influence of environmentally assisted deterioration (corrosion and stress corrosion). The effort to develop meaningful inspection points to the need for reliable data fusion procedures. Alternative materials for bridge cables are reviewed, such as continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymer matrix composites, along with suitable structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques. In bridge management terminology, 'inspection' refers to (field) visual inspection of structures, which is equivalent to visual 'testing' as used by ASNT. The word 'testing' mostly refers to the use of NDT methods such as Ml, Pl and UT, as well as to static and dynamic bad testing. This terminology will be used throughout this paper.
