Non-contact ultrasonic porosimetry
Studies of reflection of waves from interfaces between air and air-saturated porous solid belong to ultrasonic nondestructive methods useful for evaluation of porosity and tortuosity of porous materials. Due to simplicity of the method it seems to be attractive for laboratory and field studies of concrete and other construction materials. Although the technique has been already used its limitations and conditions of efficiency are little known. This paper discusses the technique of estimation of porosity and tortuosity of porous materials based on measurements of reflection coefficient. The automatic measuring system controlled by a computer is described and problems related to experimental technique and signal analysis are considered. The results obtained for reference materials and selected porous materials including concrete are discussed. Limitations of the approach assuming single phase model of ideal fluid in porous material are discussed.
