Identification of reinforcements in reinforced concrete structures using ground penetrating radar
Civil infrastructures are constructed with reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete elements. The reinforced concrete elements are reinforced with steel rods. The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can be adopted to measure the cover thickness and also the presence of the reinforcement. The advantage in GPR is that, it is a line measurement and the details in the cross section can be evaluated in a single run. A large scale reinforced concrete test specimen was designed and constructed at the Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC), exclusively for the data generation and validation of different NDT techniques. It is a two storey RCC framed building of size 4.15 m x 4.15 m with beams and columns. Both the slabs have reinforcements with various ratios and also with different spacings. Beams and columns are also provided with different ratios of reinforcements and spacings of the stirrups/ties. This paper highlights the effectiveness of the GPR in measuring the thickness of the members and also in identifying the reinforcements and its spacing.
