Phosphorus containing flame retrardants in epoxy resins
This paper discusses the challenge to incorporate phosphorus-containing reactive and additive flame retardants in epoxy resins for glass fibre reinforced composites using for example as basic material for printed wiring boards. The efficiency of different phosphacyclic and open-chained phosphorus flame retardants in epoxies is compared and evidence of the predominant flame-retardant mechanism is given. More importantly the influence of different reactive and additive flame retardants on the glass transition temperature of the epoxy materials is presented and novel very effective flame retardants based on the structure of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) will be introduced.
