Modern sealing system with internal hydraulic accumulator
The build-up of pressure within modern sealing systems of hydraulic cylinders is due to an unwanted collection of drag oil. It is mainly caused by the arrangement of several sealing elements, in combination with asymmetric sealing edges. Specific operating parameters like different speed of inward and outward movement of the rod, or long stroke applications are catalysts for this pressure build-up, which can exceed normal operating values. Demanding applications can be equipped with a sealing system consisting of a pressure relieved primary seal like the Omegat OMS-MR-PR in combination with the volume compensator Vocomatic. Stroke lengths of 6 m and more can be realised. Special designs of hydraulic cylinders for heavy duty applications - e. g. for long working strokes - usually implement challenging requirements for the sealing systems. To create solutions, the limitations for their use and the interactions of state of the art sealing elements must be known in detail. Basic fundamentals like the mechanism of sealing edges are key factors for enhancements and new developments. In combination with a deep understanding of the application and its requirements, new and reliable sealing solutions can be found. In this article it is shown, that even hydraulic lifting cylinder for floodgates with a stroke length of 18 m can be equipped with a suitable sealing system, able to safely avoid failure by extrusion due to pressure building-up within the sealing elements. High functionality is ensured combined with long service life.
