Thermal barrier effect of intumescent coatings and mats on fibre-reinforced polymeric composites
The use of ceramic mats and intumescent coatings is a popular and efficient passive fireproofing method to protect materials against heat and fire, most commonly used in construction and marine industries. This method is of particular importance for fibre-reinforced composites where the organic resin matrix on exposure to heat can soften, decompose, ignite and may burn producing smoke and toxic fumes. The surface protection can reduce the rate of these processes by decreasing heat transfer from the fire to the structure. In this paper thermal barrier effect of ceramic intumescent mats on glass-reinforced polyester and flame retardant coatings on glass-reinforced epoxy composites has been studied. A number of samples have been prepared and tested for their fire performance using a cone calorimeter. The results have been analysed in terms of their intumescence, char depth and char nature, and two types of systems compared.
