Numerical modeling of scale aircraft fire tests
Fire tests were performed in a model of a passenger aircraft compartment. The tests were carried out on a 1/4 scaled chamber which represented a 4 m long segment of an A320 passenger cabin. The ignition source consisted in a kerosene container outside the test enclosure, next to the fuselage and it will enter by the side opening that simulates the door. The materials used in the scale tests of the aircraft cabin were also tested, taking into account different locations inside: seat materials, carpeting and honeycomb panels. These HRR (heat release rate) bench scale tests (OSU and Cone Calorimeter) were used as an input for the computer modeling with the purpose to characterize all the materials. Several simulations were calculated with the fire model Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), developed by the Building and Fire Research Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology - NIST (USA).
