Military fabrics assessed for US firefighters' garments
Several Fire Departments in the USA are evaluating a protective fabric used by the US military for potential use in garments worn by their firefighters. TenCate Defender M has inherently flame-resistant properties that will not wash out or wear out. Now the Fire Departments are assessing is for use as a thermal liner for fire fighters' turnout gear. The fabric is breathable, naturally wicks perspiration away from the body and is lightweight, making it comfortable enough for station wear shirts, jackets and trousers (pants). TenCate Defender M was designed for the military, it also has excellent resistance to wear, tear and fading. This ensures a longer life and greater value, for firefighters' turnout gear as well. TenCate Defender M is a cost-efficient option for garments worn by wildland firefighters, as it is priced lower than other flame-resistant fabrics currently available. TenCate Defender M is a blend of 65 % Lenzing FR Rayon, 25 % para-aramid and 10 % polyamide. Traditionally produced in prints as required by the US Army and US Marine Corps, the fabric is now available in a variety of colours, including solids and camouflage prints, to meet the needs of both structural and wildland firefighting organizations. The company reports that the fabric meets a number of standards: National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1971, 1977, 1975, and Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) 155.1.
