A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Dams are designed and built to serve for a long lasting time of reliable and safe operation. Many of these structures are now in operation for a long time with essential experience available about their performance. A continuous safety assessment of these important hydraulic structures is part of the operation and maintenance. During the course of time, to cope with the state of the art and scientific knowledge, part of the design philosophy and construction methods have changed. In this light the safety reassessment of existing dam structures is an additional added value to gain more experience of the structural behaviour of dams. This process is shown for the safety assessment of an existing arch dam with special respect to abutment stability and uplift pressure. Additionally, during the safety assessment procedure valuable experience is gained which is used for actual dam design issues. This development should be considered during the execution of the design and has a great impact on existing design regulations and dam safety aspects. Especially when building dams under different and difficult site conditions, the design has to be adapted for these circumstances and needs. To account for this it should be realized, that the contract should serve for the highest possible flexibility to assure for an appropriate and long lasting technical solution.
