The coefficient of permeability of composite geomembrane is less than 10-11 cm/s, so it is quite impermeable. The composite geomembrane has been widely used as impermeable layer in many water conservation projects. This paper presents analysis of the main mechanical properties of composite geomembrane, which are important for the design of composite geomembrane rockfill dams, and proposes two methods to choose the suitable type of composite geomembrane for the rockfill dams. Finally, the highest rockfill dam constructed by directional blasting method in China which adopted composite geomembrane successfully for impermeability enhancement is presented in detail.
