Numerical modeling of the seismic response of an earth dam founded on liquefiable soils
This paper presents a numerical modeling of the seismic behavior of an earth dam rested on liquefiable foundation. Numerical simulation is carried out using effective stressbased, fully coupled nonlinear dynamic analysis. The Finn- Byrne model with extended Masing rules is used to model pore pressure generation in the liquefied soils. Pore pressure is accumulated as a function of the cyclic shear strain amplitude. The soil stiffness and hysteretic damping change with loading history. The procedures of calibrating the constructed numerical model with centrifuge test data are explained. Afterwards, the seismic response of an earth dam founded on a liquefiable sandy soil foundation is evaluated and discussed. Special emphasis is given to the computed excess pore water pressures, deformations and accelerations during seismic loading. It is shown that the numerical model can predict the fundamental aspects of liquefaction phenomenon occurred in the earth dam-foundation system during seismic loading.
