A pessimistic view of the energy auditing of building structures with the use of infrared thermography
Despite the pessimistic assessment of the actual accuracy of energy inspections with the use of IR thermography, the author does not cast any doubt on the necessity and advisability of applying this method in building and energy auditing as a whole. IR thermography has no alternatives in view of its longdistance character, high sensitivity, and operativeness. The efficiency of the method can be improved by reducing the main measuring error and also by increasing the temperature drop in inspected objects. The 10.0 deg C indoortooutdoor temperature drop specified by the standards ISO 6781-83 Thermal Insulation, Qualitative Detection of Thermal Irregularities in Building Envelopes. Infrared Method and GOST (State Standards) 26629-85 Building and Structures. Infrared Method for the Quality Inspection of the Thermal Insulation of Building Envelopes seems to be sufficient for revealing structural defects but requires revision to increase the quality of calculations of heat losses. It should also be noted that the rated error of IR imagers in the measurement of absolute temperatures can be reduced in the measurements of temperature differences, for example, in construction and medicine.
