Processes for polymer modification of concrete and properties of the modified concretes were reviewed. In particular, the concretes modified by using polymer admixtures, polymer-cement concretes, polymer-impregnated concretes and resin concretes were presented. The review was focused on the water-reducing admixtures (plasticizers and superplasticizers). The main types of polymers used as well as the mechanisms and effects of using them were described. The anti-washout admixtures used in underwater and self-compacting concretes were also presented. The model of microstructure formation of the composite materials was discussed, including the interactions between continuous polymer film and hardened Portland cement paste resulting in an improvement of the properties of the cement paste-aggregate interfacial zone, and crack-bridging in the cement paste by polymer. The classification, basic applications and prospects of development of the polymer-modified concretes were presented. The growing need of adjustment of the cement concretes to the changing requirements was pointed out.
