Studying changes in the structural and dynamic characteristics of a disintegrating massif of rocks using radon concentration variations
The state of a massif of rocks can be tested without disturbing its integrity by using such indicators of processes occurring in it as acoustic and electromagnetic emissions, emanation of radiogenic gases (radon), and other indicators. In particular, by using radon concentration variations one can evaluate the time changes in the characteristics of both the medium itself and the parameters that characterize the conditions and mechanisms of radon migration in rocks. It has been established that long-term high-amplitude radon anomalies are caused by processes of destruction. Experimental data on radon concentration variations were quantitatively interpreted on the basis of a proposed quantitative model that describes the process of the formation of high-amplitude radon anomalies. As a result, relative time variations in the structural (porosity and specific inner surface) and dynamic (pressure) characteristics of a disintegrating massif of rocks were reconstructed.
