Challenges for fibre and interphase design of basalt fibre reinforced concrete
This work overviews our studies on basalt fibres and their application for concrete reinforcement. The commercial fibres differ strongly in the mechanical properties as well as the durability because of the wide ranges of chemical compositions of basalts and sizings. Ageing studies of unsized basalt fibres in different alkaline solutions reveal that the understanding of the corrosion process is a necessary basis for improving the chemical resistance. Model fibres are used to show the influence of the chemical composition and the ratio of Fe2O3 to CaO, respectively, on the processability but also on the alkali resistance of the basalt fibres. The application of polymer coatings can enhance the working capability of basalt reinforced concrete additionally. Therefore, it is necessary to adapt the coating formulations compatible to the sizings, as well known from our research with AR-glass fibres.
