Stainless steel rebars - influence of the surface state on the critical chloride threshold level
In this study, a potentiostatic method has been used to determine the chloride tolerance of stainless steel rebar in synthetic pore-solutions. The results show that the chloride tolerance of the duplex designations is comparable to AISI 316, while AISI 304 has a slightly lower chloride tolerance. Moreover, the surface state of the stainless steel rebars is important for an optimum corrosion resistance in the alkaline concrete environment. Both rebars with the mill-scale left and rebars that were over-pickled had a significantly lower corrosion resistance than rebars that were normally pickled and sand-blasted rebars. In addition, it was shown that the results showed some scatter when several tests were performed. It was therefore suggested that the critical chloride threshold level for stainless steels should be handled as a probability instead of a discrete number, using a high probability that the critical chloride threshold level is exceeded. This is in line how carbon steel in concrete is handled.
