Controlling properties of concrete through nanosized particles and fibers
This paper provides an overview of recent research in the field of nanoscale modification of cementitious materials with the use of different mineral admixtures and nanofibers conducted at the Center for Advanced Cement-Based Materials (ACBM) at Northwestern University. The presented investigations focus on the reduction of formwork pressure through the use of nanoclays, the development of an improved slipform paving concrete, the development of cement based materials reinforced with carbon nanofibers and nanotubes and the reduction of calcium leaching with the use of silica nanoparticles. All of these topics share innovative processing techniques to ensure superior concretes that can further today's growing need for reliable high performance concretes.
