Electromagnetic shielding characteristics of woven fabrics made of hybrid yarns containing metal wire
In this study, the electromagnetic shielding characteristics of woven fabrics made of hybrid yarns containing stainless steel wire are investigated. The following results were obtained in this study. In general, all samples showed the EMSE values of 25-65 dB for the frequency range of 30 MHz-9.93 GHz. The EMSE values of woven fabrics made of hybrid yarns show the typical course of frequency depending shielding effectiveness. As expected the EMSE values decreased with increased frequency of electromagnetic radiation for all fabric samples. The electromagnetic wave polarization and the direction of hybrid yarn in the fabric construction are two of related factors affecting the EMSE of woven fabrics. Concerning the general shielding effectiveness warp and weft direction are two systems independent from each other. On the other hand, to prevent the possible resonances caused when the conductive hybrid yarn used in one way, hybrid yarn must be used in both warp and weft direction. The test results show that warp and weft densities can also play an important role on the EMSE of woven fabrics, depending on the electro magnetic wave polarization. Higher weft density means higher EMSE behaviour of woven fabrics for vertical polarization of electromagnetic waves. In addition, the EMSE behaviours of the fabric samples which have different weaving construction type, differ for different frequency of electromagnetic waves. Also the effect of weaving construction type is not independent the polarization of electromagnetic waves. The fabrics woven from hybrid yarns containing metal wire can be used to strengthen the walls and windows, in order to prevent the emission of electromagnetic energy containing secret information, also in our house and office buildings for protection against electromagnetic radiation from the base stations of cellular phones, TV and radio broadcasting antennas, wireless network etc.
