Masonry mortar containing mixed recycled aggregates from the traditional ceramic industry
In this work, we present the general properties of a masonry mortar (cement+hydratediime+aggregates) containing virgin recycled aggregates in substitution of washed river sand. The recycled aggregates were produced by crushing and sieving a proportionated mixture of red clay bricks, red clay roof tiles, glazed floor tiles, and sanitary ware that had been deemed improper for sale (unused). These products were rejected during their respective ceramic industry processing operations and as such are different from demolition or construction rubbish. The results indicate that the properties in the fresh and hardened states of mortars containing the mixed virgin recycled aggregates satisfy all requirements of a regular masonry mortar.
