Hollow cylindrical pellets - A noval method of agglomeration
Pellets are agglomerated iron ore fines to be used as iron bearing burden for blast furnace. Till date spherical pellets were in use where the iron ore fines of mesh size 100 were mixed with bentonite and formed into balls in a disc. It was thought of to increase the surface area for reduction . Thus it was proposed to make hollow cylindrical pellets with a height to diameter ratio 3:2. The diameter of the hole is 3mm, 5mm, 7mm respectively of the pellets. The strength of the pellets was adjusted with different binders such as bentonite, molasses, dextrin and starch. The reducibility of the pellets was measured and found to be favored for use in blast furnace.
