Photovoltaics and zero energy buildings: the role of building facades
This paper discusses the role of building facades on the solar potential of urban landscapes. In the past, these vertical features have not been considered interesting for the deployment of solar photovoltaics due to its lower yield, due to large incidence angle. The dramatic cost reduction in PV modules now allows the rethinking of the role of solar facades for the large scale deployment of PV in urban environments. On the one hand, if, as expected, further decrease in the cost of PV panels will make it cost competitive for electricity production at electricity production conditions worse than those corresponding to optimum inclination and orientation, the large area available on vertical walls will enable the development of Nearly Zero Energy Buildings which produce locally its own energy demand. On the other hand, the less than optimum inclination of the PV modules will actually contribute to a better adjustment between the solar electricity production and the load diagram.
