The Chemistry of Micronized Copper Treatments and How it Differs from that of other Copper Wood Preservatives
The chemistry of the reaction of micronized copper preservatives with wood is reviewed and compared with the fixation chemistry of alkaline copper preservatives. Important differences in their reactions are highlighted. Recent research using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is used to understand the reaction of basic copper carbonate with wood, including how quickly the reaction takes place and its fixation to wood. Quantification of the reacted copper is discussed.
