Steel corrosion and corrosion-induced cracking in recycled aggregate concrete
This study investigated four reinforced concrete mixtures with different replacement percentages of recycled coarse aggregate (RA). The corrosion rate was measured using an electrochemical workstation, and the corrosion-induced cracks on the concrete surface were observed using digital microscopy. Corrosion-induced cracks tend to propagate through the interfaces between coarse aggregate and mortar, which is known to be a mechanically weak area in concrete. Corrosion-induced cracking may propagate into RA due to its internal flaws. In areas containing several interfaces, corrosion-induced cracks tend to propagate through the interface between the natural coarse aggregate and new mortar and the interface between the old coarse aggregate and new mortar but not the interface between the old mortar and new mortar. However, steel corrosion and the corrosion-induced cracking process in concrete are not significantly influenced by replacing a small amount (33% in the study) of coarse aggregate with RA.
