Turning the heat down. Energy savings on highly reflective roof coatings measured in the field
There is increasing interest in the use of cool-roof coatings, both to reduce energy consumption and costs of HVAC systems and to mitigate the urban 'heat island' phenomenon. Various studies have reported different levels of savings obtained by using these coatings, but there may be difficulties in interpreting them for different locations and building construction methods. Results are reported from a test series on small houses built in typical Mexican style and construction, and exposed to the natural climate in one of Mexico's hottest regions. It was shown that the energy required to maintain a constant temperature of 73 °F (23 °C) could be reduced by more than 30 % using a highly reflective roof coating rather than a black asphalt one or the traditional Mexican red coating. The method described could be adapted to provide practical test evaluations of different housing constructions.
