Use of air permeability apparatus to determine the durability of natural building stones
Air permeability test is used as a performance based durability testing for concrete. The test method was originally developed in South Africa. In this method, a penetrating gas (e.g., air) is forced through hardened concrete and the coefficient of permeability is used to calculate a durability index. The method is fast (i.e., six hours), provides a quantitative measure of interconnected pores and unlike absorption tests is less prone to operational errors. Porosity of natural stones is usually correlated to its durability. The applicability of the air permeability test to natural building stones is investigated in this experimental program. This paper reports the preliminary findings of the study in which air permeability indices of various natural stones (i.e., limestone varieties) are measured and compared to porosity values. Air permeability apparatus was built to test 7by7by2cm specimens. Seven Different limestone marbles were tested. Minimum 6 replicates were tested for each type. The air permeability index is compared to porosity values. The results show air permeability index can be used as a measure of building stone permeability.
