Mechanical and leaching properties of incinerator bottom ash-cement blends - A factorial analysis approach
In this study the mechanical and leaching behaviour of activated incinerator bottom ash/cement mixtures was investigated. Chemical and mechanical activation were applied to improve the reactivity of bottom ash in cement blends. Chemical activation made use of CaCl2 or CaSO4, which were selected on the basis of the results from previous studies. CaCl2 was found to exhibit the best effects on the evolution of the hydration process in the mixtures, and under specific conditions mechanical strength values above those of pure cement were attained. The leaching of trace metals was found to be strongly dependent on the type of metal contaminant concerned, as well as on the activation conditions adopted. It was also suggested that most metal contaminants are present in the hardened materials in complex mineral phases the composition and solubility of which is still to be elucidated.
