Durability of Geosynthetic Strip at Connection in MSE Structures
Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) structures, using geosynthetic reinforcements attached to precast concrete or wire facings, have been in use for over 40 years. The choice of facing together with the accompanying reinforcement affords the opportunity to use the advantages of vertical or steeply sloping wall geometry while at the same time maintaining significant flexibility. Though field and laboratory tests have been made available to evaluate the durability of geosynthetic reinforcements in construction and long term performance, little has been presented on the durability of the connection itself. This paper will present the results of lab testing, as well as durability testing on polymer reinforcement strips exhumed from site. The effect of wire size and service time will be addressed within the context of minimum connection requirements, material selection and construction installation for durability.
