Formulating Geogrid Effect by Using Bearing Capacity Analysis of Reinforced Flexible Pavements
An optimized formula is proposed by using bearing capacity analysis of flexible pavements reinforced with geogrid and optimization procedure. The R², which derived from error analysis between bearing capacity analysis results and predicted values using proposed formula, is 0.9233. In this paper, the method used by the authors for bearing capacity analysis of unreinforced pavements is extended to the case of reinforced analysis. Results of the theoretical analyses of the flexible pavement sections with and without reinforcement are compared. Geogrid reinforcement improves stability and decreases the thickness of base material needed for flexible pavement. The theoretical analysis also shows that reinforcement increases the factor of safety against failure of a flexible pavement and increases pavement life. A couple of examples demonstrate efficient approaches to estimate pavement life and asphalt or crushed stone reduction by using proposed optimized formula.
