Permanent Geogrid Facing Mesh in Vegetated MSE Structures
Historically, vegetated MSE structures have relied on the vegetation growth to provide permanent facing stability. The vegetation root structure helps to stabilize the facing to prevent surficial instability, but in some cases, vegetative growth may be thin or poorly developed. When this happens, surface stability is fully dependant on the geosynthetic facing. This requires a material that will retain the soil particles and be resistant to UV degradation for the life of the structure. In recent years, geosynthetic developments have led to geogrid facing mesh used in permanent VMSE structures that can retain the soil particles and resist UV degradation for the design life of the structure. This paper reviews the current geogrid facing mesh technology, laboratory testing and the performance of these materials over the last 10 years in constructed VMSE structures.
