Low-Value Residual (LVR) RECPs for Reducing Soil Erosion on Burned Soils
Soils after a recent fire can be particularly susceptible to erosion. Rolled erosion control products (RECPs) are an effective method to reduce erosion and re-establish vegetation. Low-value residuals (LVRs) from forests have not yet been fully explored as a possible RECP material source. This study considers the innovative use of forest-based LVR RECPs for the control of soil erosion, control of suspended solids, and enhancement of vegetative growth on burned soils. RECPs were manufactured out of three LVRs: leaf litter, willow chips, and spruce needles. LVR RECP performance was analyzed using rainsplash erosion (ASTM D 7101) and germination (ASTM D 7322) tests. Results showed the LVR RECPs were effective for all three performance metrics. In general, leaf litter and spruce needles were more effective than willow chips. Overall, the use of LVRs as a material source for RECPs shows great promise as an addition to current best management practices.
