Innovative Sediment Capping Techniques and Methodologies Using Geosynthetics
Sediment management principles have been issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that contains site-specific risk management, risk-driven goals, and risk-driven remedies. With these principles and the emergence and wider acceptance of reactive media technologies, there has been an increase in remedial actions which feature risk reduction through the use of a geosynthetic mat containing reactive media. This article highlights several sediment capping projects in which in situ remediation using geosynthetics has been pursued instead of traditional dredging solutions. Typical design of capping systems will be presented. Additionally, this paper summarizes challenges posed by the geosynthetic capping system installation and innovative deployment methodologies that have been developed for these materials.
