Tailings Dam for a Copper Mine Waterproofed with Bituminous Geomembrane Coletanche and its Behavior under an Earthquake of Magnitude 8.1
In this article, you will find details on use of bituminous geomembrane (called here BGM) for watertighting a tailings dam in a Milpo copper mine in Peru, in Cerro Lindo near Chincha (150 km South of Lima along the Pacific Ocean), characteristics of the work and conclusions of the survey done by Golder Associates, Lima office on the behavior of the dam and in particular of the BGM by an earthquake of magnitude of 8.1 in Chincha close to the site (25 km on East of the city of Chincha in Andines Mountain, altitude of around 2000 m. This work was done at the complete satisfaction of the consultant and the client on time without any delay due to bad weather or strong wind. Till 2007 and in spite of a huge earthquake, Coletanche with its geotextile inside protected for ageing by bitumen, has a strong behavior and maintain constantly its main function: watertightness. No defect and no seepage till today. No interruption of activity for the client till today due to any seepage. The reservoir in front of the dam has been full for 7 years.
