Improving the bond strength between steel rebar and concrete by oxidation treatments of the rebar
Steel rebars are widely used to reinforce concrete. The effectiveness of the reinforcement depends on the bend strength between rebar and concrete. Surface deformations on the rebar enhance the bond due to mechanical interlocking between rebar and concrete. Oxidation treatments of steel rebar by water immersion (2 days to 5 days) and ozone exposure increased the bond strength between steel rebar and concrete by 14 % and 22 % respectively. The treatments slightly increased the electrical contact resistivity between rebar and concrete. Increase of the water immersion time to 7 days or 10 days caused the bend strength to decrease to values still above that of the case without water treatment. The contact resistivity increased monotonically with the water immersion time.
