SIMCON - a novel high performance fiber-mat reinforced cement composite for repair, retrofit and new construction
Slurry Infiltrated Mat Concrete (SIMCON) is a novel High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composite (HPFRCC) made by infiltrating continuous steel fiber-mats with a specially designed cement slurry. Due to its continuous fiber-mat configuration, and related increased fiber-efficiency, SIMCON exhibits substantially improved mechanical and durability properties even at a comparatively low fiber volume fraction. This includes very high toughness and ductility, which lead to an enormous increase in the ability of structural systems to dissipate energy - a feature particularly desirable for earthquake-resistant design. Finally, since the fiber-mats are conveniently delivered in large rolls, SIMCON can be easily installed in the field. From test results, basic material behavior of SIMCON, as well as its effects on improving flexural behavior, shear behavior and durability of structural elements is provided. This information will provide practicing engineers with a reference for creating cost-effective long-term solutions necessary for preserving and re-building the national infrastructure.
