Investigation of the use of carpet waste PP fibers in concrete
An experimental program was undertaken to evaluate the effect of using WPF (Waste Polypropylene Fibers) in cement based matrices. Three different cementitious mixes were used, one regular concrete (i.e. with fine and coarse aggregates), one mortar (with regular sand), and one special mortar (with very fine sand). The volume fractions of fibers ranged from 0.15 % to 3.94 %. Bending and compression tests were carried out according to ASTM standard procedures. In two cases, a commercially available polypropylene fiber, especially designed for application in concrete, was also used to provide a measure of comparison of the efficiency of waste fibers. Over-all, more than one hundred tests were undertaken. One of the conclusion is that special cementitious mixes can be developed to utilize at best WPF fibers. However, these would require relatively high volume fractions of fibers, relatively low strength matrices, and the use of very fine aggregates (sand).
