The role of desiccants in insulating glass-units
Molecular sieves have the advantage of universal applicability. On the basis of their well defined pore structure, they can be used in insulating glass unit production in combination with all the standard filling gases as long as the right pore structure is selected. (1) Molecular sieves show a high adsorption capacity for water, in particular in areas of low water vapour partial pressures. (2) Molecular sieves based on zeolite 3 angstrom do not tend to adsorb or desorb nitrogen. Result: No pane deflection. No stress applied to insulating glass unit edging. No bending stress. (3) Molecular sieves based on zeolite 3 angstrom show no tendency to adsorb or desorb filling gases such as SF6 and argon. No risk of glass rupture by implosion. Thus molecular sieves used as drying agents constitute a major contribution to a high level of practical quality in insulating glass units.
