New approach to durability design: an example for carbonation induced corrosion
A review is given on the service-life and durability design of concrete structural units using statistical methods for the simulation of loading and modelling of the environment. Topics discussed included tradition methods of durability design, structural design procedures, micro-environments, carbonation rate models, assessment of existing structures, and effects of weathering (climate, rain, moisture, solar radiation). To demonstrate this, the best understood deterioration mechanism, carbonation-induced reinforcement corrosion, has been chosen and a very simple test case (a balcony element) is described. In addition an assessment of existing structures is given.
