Length changes of concrete specimen during frost deicing salt resistance test
The measurement of the length changes of concrete during frost cycles is an effective tool to study phase transformation of water and to analyze damage mechanism of concrete due to frost action. The freezing process can be devided up into two different phases, a spontaneous expansion at freezing point and a continuous expansion below freezing point. This can be explained by partial freezing of macropores and a subsequent build up of hydraulic pressure. The second phase, the continuous expansion, starts after all of the frost medium is frozen and the temperature is lowered further. This expansion does not occur at a fixed temperature but increases continuously with falling temperature. This is the consequence of the pore size freezing point depression in pores with continuous size distribution.
