The behaviour of polymer grids as reinforcement
Polypropylene (PP) grids, with their inherent corrosion-resistance, were tested for their suitability to reinforce concrete. The grids were made of high-density PP sheets with circulars holes punched in them in a regular pattern. The sheet is then heated and stretched in the machine direction to give a unaxial grid, and stretched again to give a biaxial grid with improved tensile strength and stiffness. The grids were used to reinforce concrete and then subjected to laboratory tests. Static tests were performed on short columns and wall panels, and dynamic tests on shaking tables. The reinforcement gave both ductility and strength at a lower cost than steel reinforcement. The grids can be used as reinforcement in 3 ways: by insertion in horizontal layers (monoaxial), by coating flat or space surfaces (2-axial), or by confining the structural members or construction parts (3-axial).
