Concrete with waste glass as aggregate
Post-consumer glass represents a major component of solid waste, yet its use as an aggregate in concrete is problematic because of the strong alkali-silica reaction (ASR) between the cement paste and the glass aggregate. In a research project at Columbia University the use of mixed-color crushed waste glass as ingredient in concrete products was investigated. It was found that glass, if ground to at least mesh size no 30, does not cause ASR expansion as measured in die ASTMC 1260 test. If ground to mesh size no 400 or finer, it exhibits pozzolanic properties and is suitable for partial cement replacement. Specific concrete products are currently under development. These include concrete masonry and decorative products for numerous architectural and other applications.
