Strengthening by means of externally bonded FRP reinforcement
The strengthening with externally bonded FRP reinforcement is feasible. Moreover, the great interest in this technique (extensive international research and several applications) makes it become well documented and state-of-the-art. By means of external FRP sheet bonding considerable strengthening is obtained in terms of ultimate load and stiffness in the cracked state. Also the crack development is positively influenced. In the test programmes also good results are obtained in strengthening pre-cracked concrete elements or concrete elements strengthened under load. The analysis of the strengthened concrete elements and the quality control of the practical execution should be performed in an accurate way to achieve sufficient composite action between the external reinforcement and the concrete. The analysis of concrete beams strengthened in flexure and in shear, as well as the analysis of wrapped coulums under axial compression was briefly addressed. It follows that the debonding verification is very important in the design analysis. It is also noticed that the external shear strengthening contribution is not that obvious to predict, compared to steel stirrups.
