A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The application of micro polydoc in the international reference centre for community water supply and sanitation (IRC)
IRC is an internationally operating, independent foundation, dealing with information and technology support for water supply and sanitation improvement in developing countries. The focus of IRC's work is on the rural and urban-fringe areas where the need for assistance is greatest. Attention is given not only to 'hardware' such as pumps, water treatment filters etc. but also to 'software' components including training, social aspects and planning and evaluation. Support is provided by means of publications, seminars and courses, demonstration projects, as well as by project evaluations and other advisory services. The staff of approximately 30 people includes sanitary engineers, social scientists and information specialists. The latter form the Information Section, which is responsible for publications produced by IRC itself as well as those held in the Documentation Unit. The task of this Unit is primarily to support the internal staff members but it also handles some 100 requests for information each year. A major part of these requests come from visitors who whish to consult the ca. 8000 documents and 240 journals and newsletters. Roughly half of the documents can be termed as grey literature, i.e. unpublished project and research reports. IRC has probably the largest collection of grey literature in the specialized field of third world water supply and sanitation. Most of these documents are not collected by commercial database producers, whose main focus is on technology and not on software.
