Designer fabricator interpreter system
The Designer Fabricator Interpreter (DFI) system is a knowledge-based computer tool that attempts to bridge the information interface gap between design engineers and fabricators of structural steel systems. The current prototype DFI system, acting as an intelligent interface between designers, fabricators and erectors, focuses on critiquing designs of steal beam-to-column connections in buildings based on standard steel design, fabrication and field erection procedures. Current research includes the development of a cooperative problem solving architecture in which semi-autonomous agents reason from specific viewpoints of construction while working together to reach a common goal. The negotiation process is overseen by an arbitration agent who assists the other agents in arriving at an agreement. As a result, the system presents the user with several alternate connection configurations with explanations from expert agent viewpoints of design, fabrication and field erection.
