The logic of architecture: programming the invention of physical artifacts
Architects and other designers invent physical artifacts to serve human needs. Although serendipity and inexplicable flashes of insight can certainly play a role in the production of such inventions, the basic process of deriving them is describable and formalizable, and can be automated. This paper outlines an approach to accomplishing this formalization and automation, and relates it to some fundamental ideas of logic programming. The basic idea is to represent by means of shape transformations rules the knowledge that is needed to solve a problem of artifact invention. Each such rule tells how to combine shapes standing for components or subsystems in such a way that the resulting subsystem accomplishes some useful end. Artifact designs are derived by recursive application of the rule system to a starting shape. Thus artifact designs are treated as expressions in languages specified by specialized types of shape grammars known as artifact grammars.
