The author describes the concept of intelligent building, its background technologies, and its influence upon the industrial structure, urban structure and the office environment. Intelligent buildings provide building automation to carry automatic control of various building facilities such as transportation, lighting, telecommunication, air-conditioning, and disaster prevention, office automation functions using copying machines, word processors, facsimile systems and computer terminals, and telecommunication functions using technology of data communication, electronic mail, video conferencing, and other advanced technologies.
