Remote fault/smoke detection for motor control centers

The authors describe research and testing on the use of smoke detectors installed directly inside low-voltage motor-control centers. Also addressed is why externally mounted (ceiling, pendent, or low elevation) smoke detectors are not adequate in detecting smoldering or burning electrical insulation. It is found that, though needed for building-materials fires, pendent-mounted smoke detectors are not he best monitors of electrical insulation fires. Furthermore, it is shown that, with the proper smoke detector location, i.e. the installation of smoke detectors directly inside and at the bottom of electrical equipment such as motor-control centers, an improved monitoring for early detection of insulation failures and fires can be achieved.
