A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Teaching your system to share
Creating multi-user virtual worlds is a relatively new challenge for developers of virtual reality applications. It is especially challenging to build networked VR systems based on inexpensive PC-based hardware, due to limitations in system software and inefficient networking hardware. This article explains how we created a multi-person shared virtual environment using DOS-based PCs. It also covers some of the design goals in creating a collaborative design tool for creating and modifying virtual buildings. Workroom is a general purpose simulation infrastructure that allows multiple participants to interact in unpredictable ways while minimizing simulation latency.
